Lucid Spatial Dreaming
Where dreams and virtual reality meet
Thank you for sharing your interest in lucid dreaming.
Lucid Spatial Dreaming is an application I have developed specific to mobile and desktop VR headsets. It has actually been years in the making since I first started sharing my Dreamscaping Series concepts in the late 1990’s and forward to around 2015 when VR was dramatically transformed by affordable 360 degree immersive headsets.
It was around this time that I began contributing to the VRChat network of virtual worlds, where you can preview my worlds with others, under a search for my Artist3d contributor’s account.
When Quest 3 mobile began featuring a settings option to allow for apps to re-center while laying down, without tracking and in the dark, I began fleshing out my concept for an app where you could lay down and enter a dream state. I was particularly targeting the power nap, when you may just want to rest and perhaps drift off briefly.
The idea of creating, dreamy, layered imagery that randomly assembles every time you start the program, really appealed to me, so I went the extra mile and created an app with default settings that creates a single dreamscape but one I designed to expand to an infinite number of lucid dream configurations, once the app senses you are online!
This means every time you run Lucid Spatial Dreaming it draws from randomization of content that I have arranged in specific folders on my website. You can re-spawn the configuration any time during the experience until colour and content seems to your taste and liking.
It also means that when I update those content folders, all users of the app will see additional random elements entering ‘the dreams’ without having to update the application itself! It is a simple conceptual way to increasingly enhance things and allow for interesting new content surprises periodically.
Since laying down is my favourite meditation pose and since you don’t want a meditation to become a state of ‘vegetation’, Lucid Spatial Dreaming can deliver the requisite relaxation through what I call an active meditative state of receptive creativity. Here, the mind enters a novel state of free-association and changing potential meaning, all within one experiential. You never know how you will associate with what you see.
What I find most compelling and suggest, in using the app, is to try using it when you are likely to doze off and enter a true dream state, then, when you are awakened, you will find yourself in a surprisingly novel virtual reality. Lucid Spatial Dreaming can potentially allow you to explore and analyze the bridge between dreaming and the wakeful dream state using VR.
Finally, as a long-time composer, I have included original ambient soundtracks that are randomized selections of my music if you simply tap the A button on a VR controller. From then on, randomly selected pieces of music follow. As with Image components, I periodically add new pieces of music that I hope you will enjoy.
When it comes to ambient music, Brian Eno (Music for Airports) once described his initial thoughts about it when he was in a hospital bed and could not reach the radio or even tell where the sound was located because it was playing so softly. In this respect I highly recommend reducing the volume of sound to a background ambience as it really works better in allowing you to doze off, when entering and reentering dream states. It’s fun waking up suddenly into quite a different world with a world.
Admittedly this is a swimming dreamlike vision in motion so if you decide to pick up a copy please take it in small increments particularly if you happen to suffer from motion sensitivity.
Here is a link where you can purchase and download a copy for $7.77 along with other applications I create for my little shop.
